Planning a Movie

Planning Basics

Creating a Director movie can be a time-consuming process. Planning is essential in developing a Director movie. An instructional model is a systematic guide for planning multimedia projects.

When planning a Director project, it’s important to complete the following steps:

I. Determine the purpose of the movie project.

Ask the following questions?
What is the purpose of the movie. Is it for training? Education? Promotion? Sales? Marketing?
The answer will determine the types of features you may want to include or exclude in the movie.

Purpose Example:

The purpose of the movie is to give beginning Director students practice in developing a movie.

II. Identify the audience

How you create your movie will depend on how you classify the intended audience. If the intended audience consists of beginner computer users, you will have to concentrate on making the navigational controls simple. If the users are experienced you can include more complex navigational structures.

Audience Example:

Introduction to Director MX course is for students who have all the basic computer skills on the Windows XP or Mac X operating systems.

III. Select a topic and state the objectives for the project

Topic: UFO Animation

Objectives Example:

1. Explain the basic steps for developing an interactive multimedia project.

2. Utilize the steps for developing an interactive multimedia project by completing a basic project using a systems approach.

IV. Design a Concept Map of the Movie

Design a concept map or flowchart for the navigational structure of the Director movie project. Concept maps organize content and illustrate its interrelationships. Project designers use this information to create a storyboard.

Example of Concept Map Using Inspiration®:

V. Storyboard

The storyboard tells the story of your movie in visual form, a blueprint. It helps you design the layout of each screen in your movie. (Storyboard Template - Word Version for down load)

VI. Assessment

Multimedia project assessment is based on criteria that reflect the projects quality. One of the best assessment tools is a rubric. What is a rubric? A Rubric is a guide for critiquing the effectiveness of media projects, and a process of establishing the essential goals and assessment criteria of multimedia projects in your class. A rubric should contain project tasks and a grading scale.
